What Reading Means To Me
I'm not going to lie, I'm not one to pick up a 500 page novel and start reading it for hours. Reading fiction is something that is growing on me. It's not to say I hate reading, I read everyday, but it is something that doesn't come out of personal entertainment. I mostly read newspapers and magazine articles, so I guess what reading means to me is the source of information and news. Also being a journalist, it is a way that I can improve my own writing. I know so many people in this class love to read and have already been through 10 books in this current unit and I say that is great, but I guess I'm just in another place. The people in my class read books for their entertainment, they read because they love the overall story telling, writing and pleasure of picking up a novel, and finishing it. I just have a different perspective on reading, I use it in another way and that's not a bad thing. Really if were talking about storytelling, I would say that I'm a movie nut, I love movies the same way these people in my class love their books. Books and movies are so interconnected that really they have the same purpose and that's entertaining their audience. I guess a reason why I took this class was the opportunity to read more and in this "other way of entertainment." I see the people in my class and they are so passionate about their reading and maybe I'll never get to that point but I guess taking Best Sellers is a way that I can get to that point.

You're right about the difference between reading for entertainment and reading for information. But I think that at its heart the best journalism is not about information but about story-telling (I imagine you would agree about this, too). And in a class like this you're welcome to branch out beyond fiction. Non-fiction, journalistic works like Black Hawk Down, Moneyball, The Blind Side, etc. have their origins in journalism.
ReplyDeleteI dont think you "Pick up" a 500 page book, i think you would "Heave" it up :P but your right, alot of what you read is for information and I like how that is your reason.
ReplyDeleteI like your honesty here, James! Not everyone has to be so passionate about reading and that is okay. Keep on writing!!
ReplyDeleteI can definitely relate with you on reading a lot, just not reading novels a lot. Browsing the internet or reading the newspaper everyday surely must be at least the lenght of a couple chapters in a book, just not all about one story.
